Life in a remote village is not easy. Any uninvited visitors could be good news or spell a disaster. But, once in a few years, the villagers will spot a lone figure on the road. The figure will be covered in layers and layers of thick clothing under a heavy hooded cloak despite it being the hottest day of summer. Looking closer, they will spot the mask that the stranger wore and the red eyes looking at them. The villagers will not be able to see under the mask, but they don’t need to see to know that there is a pair of hungry fangs behind it.
Everyone in the village will gather for the chance to see the stranger. Small children will run up to give him a quick hug before running away to go hide behind their mothers.
The vampire will ask if there was anything that the good people needed. Bandits attacking on the nearby road? Not a problem. A monster killing the livestock? The vampire is the bigger monster. Someone in the village is injured or sick? The old vampire before them knows more than any mere human doctor.
With everything taken care of, the stranger will leave. But, before that, he will ask. “Can I have a drink for the road?” There will be no shortage of volunteers.
The vampire’s very existence meant taking from others. Therefore, being civilized meant that they had to give back. Vampires are feared and respected, but nobody is more respected than a vampire wearing the daywalker’s mask. Lilah, quite suddenly, found herself donning the legendary mask. It was now her job to go out into the hateful sun, walk among the humans while they were awake, and give back for every drop of blood vampires took from them. The good people will cheer at her coming. The bad will tremble at the mere mention of her. And may the lord help any vampire that refused to be civilized.
