Jess is on his way to Rasher, Texas, to find Harvey Spence before he goes to his hometown of Black Creek, Kansas. Along the way, he runs into an old man by the name of Woodson and his grandson, Jacob. Woodson makes toys for a living and was heading to the next town to sell some. But Spence ends up stealing his wagon of toys, leaving Woodson and Jacob on foot.
Jess helps them get their wagon full of toys back, but when Jess is ready to dole out justice to Spence, Jacob convinces Jess not to kill him. Jess relents and turns Spence in alive. He convinces Woodson and Jacob to join him in Black Creek, Kansas, for Christmas.
They agree to accompany him and along the way they run into a young couple who are moving after losing their clothing business and house to the bank. Jess offers to set both Woodson and Jacob, along with the young couple, up in Black Creek. What happens after they get there turns out to be quite a surprise, especially for Jess.
